Arnold Edinborough, O.C., M.C., M.A., LL.D., Litt.SD
The Founding President of The Council for Business and the Arts in Canada (now Business for the Arts), the late Arnold Edinborough had a varied and distinguished career as a university professor, journalist, editor of a national newspaper, editor and publisher of a national magazine and long-time contributing editor to the Financial Post on the lively arts.
Throughout his career, Arnold was also a dedicated volunteer, serving on such different and widely separated arts organizations as the Vancouver Playhouse, the Elliot Lake Centre, the New Symphony Association of Kingston, the Stratford Festival, and Roy Thomson and Massey Halls. He also served on such social welfare agency boards as the John Howard Society of Ontario, and the Abbeyfield Houses Society of Canada.
Among his many accomplishments at Business for the Arts, Arnold was particularly proud of creating the Business in the Arts Awards to recognize business support of the arts and of introducing the Young in Art program – a national program that put younger business executives on the boards of smaller arts organizations. His door was always open to those seeking advice or encouragement, whether they were CEOs, donations officers, struggling artists, entrepreneurs or someone wanting to volunteer in the arts.
In the spirit of all that Arnold Edinborough accomplished and esteemed, the Award that bears his name aims to encourage the younger generation to “take up the torch” of a lifetime commitment ot the arts in Canada.
